Cattle and Dairy

Light therapy research for dairy and beef cattle, from Optimum Bio Innovations Limited (OBIL).

Optimum Bio Innovations Limited (OBIL) is an Auckland, New Zealand based Research and Development (R&D) company focusing on improving life through biophysics - the company behind OptiRTP's health technologies. OBIL has developed a proprietary platform technology used as a basis upon which other applications, processes and technologies are developed.

Cattle and dairy is the newest application of the OBIL platform, alongside OptiRTP for human health and Optimum Bio Equine Therapy (OBET) for horses.

What we are developing

A light therapy (photobiomodulation) system for dairy and beef cattle. It is being developed independently of the equine version and designed specifically for cattle: its own wearable and its own signal modulation.

Why it matters

Herd health and productivity matter to producers at scale. The United States alone has 9.65 million milk cows and 28.5 million beef cows (USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, Cattle report, inventory as of 1 July 2026). Our research asks whether a drug-free light therapy can influence measures of:

  • Udder health markers, including inflammation and mastitis indicators
  • Milk yield and milk solids
  • Calving outcomes, calf vigour and return to cycle

These are the questions our trials are designed to answer. They are not claims.

Where we are

The programme is between proof of concept and minimum viable product. No results are claimed and no product is available for sale.

The path ahead

  1. One animal at a time. A wearable for individual animals, to be tested in a planned independent, university-run trial in the United States.
  2. Herd scale. If the trial evidence supports it, a version designed to serve a whole herd.
  3. A U.S. company. OBIL plans to spin out a separate U.S. company to take the research forward and commercialise it with partners in the cattle and dairy industries.

Work with us

We would like to hear from universities and veterinary schools, veterinarians, dairy and beef producers, industry partners and investors interested in drug-free approaches to herd health.
